HIGHLIGHTS The cost of living in February 2026, as measured by the Minimum Expenditure Basket (MEB), increased by 1.8 percent to Old SYP 2.43 million, from Old SYP 2.39 million in January 2026. This increase was driven by higher prices for eggplants, chicken meat, and gas cylinder. The Syrian currency depreciated in the parallel market to have and exchange rate from SYP 11,702 per USD in January 2025 to SYP 11,806 per USD in February 2026. Meanwhile, the official exchange rate remained stable at SYP 11,055 per USD. The rehabilitation of the Qalaat al-Madiq grain silos, with a storage capacity of 140,000 tons, was completed ahead of the 2026 wheat harvest season, strengthening Syria’s grain storage infrastructure, improving food security, and enhancing strategic reserve management. In parallel, the Syrian Petroleum Company announced a major contract to purchase 350,000 tons of gas to support domestic energy supplies, alleviate fuel shortages, stabilize the local market, and ensure the continuity of essential economic and household activities.
